From Today On, Everything Is Different
Kunstenfestival Borkel en Schaft, 2025
self portrait on mesh fabric, 6 x 4.8 m
“I am reborn. It is slimy, cold, terrifying, cosmic, loving and playful. On this planet, everything is new. Here I open my eyes, here I lick my wounds.”
From Today On, Everything Is Different is an ode to transformation. The self-portrait was created during a period of personal transformation after overcoming depression. With this experience, Meike developed a deep appreciation for the mutability of human beings. Movement arises from stillness, creating a force that continuously reinvents itself. The body that appears carries no past, but with the naivety of a newborn calf, claims a new place in the world.
Change is vulnerable, raw and unpredictable, but it allows you to get to know the world and yourself in a new way. What does your world look like when you see everything for the first time?

"Jutters” explores how we engage with AI-generated content through the lens of the "jutter": Dutch coastal foragers who comb the shoreline after storms, gathering and repurposing what the sea leaves behind. Reflecting how our lives are increasingly shaped by AI-generated media, we create a beach-like installation that blends real shoreline debris with AI-transformed images and videos. Visitors are invited to explore this space as contemporary "jutters", deciding what to keep and what to discard. In doing so, the project reimagines AI-imagery as material for reflection, encouraging a more discerning engagement with the content that drifts through our feeds.

“For Kunstenfestival Borkel en Schaft, Meike drew inspiration from the abandoned house where she exhibited: a place that was once lively, but now almost collapses under the weight of neglect and abandonment. Between the cracked walls and weathered windows lies a dark inner world that Meike brought to light in this small bedroom.”

I often think about my childhood bunny. He used to sit very still, making us wonder whether he was happy. We would always end up agreeing: “he must be, his cage is quite large”. I think about how he escaped three times, eating all the dandelions in our garden. We always managed to catch him again. When he died, I could feel his ribs through his thin-layered fur.
Sometimes we seem to have nothing to complain about but still yearn for more.
This subtlety and ambiguity of unfulfilled longing are poetically visualised in “Longing’s Embrace”, an immersive video-installation. The images seen in the installation are fictionalised interpretations of childhood, in which elements of both the familiarity and discomfort of loneliness are shown.

“Bij nader inzien neemt je mee in mijn ontwikkeling van kind tot volwassene. In de vorm van een installatie bestaande uit fotografie, video en tekst, toon ik mijn confrontatie met onverwerkte emoties vanuit drie leeftijden: tien, zestien en tweeëntwintig. Er ontvouwt zich een zoektocht naar een plek waar ik deze gevoelens kan laten rusten.”
